homeschoolingThe goal of Common Core, the educational initiative in the United States that spells out what K-12 students are expected to know in English language arts and mathematics at the end of each grade, is laudable, but many parents are choosing homeschooling over it, according to a report by Grace Smith for Education News.

Issues with Common Core

According to Smith, the issue comes from some parents who home school their children, particularly when it comes to math standards, which are perceived to be developmentally inappropriate. Another thing about Common Core that many parents who home school their children have a problem with is their lessening control as citizens over a very centralized education policy, which the Common Core certainly is.

The report also quotes a home schooling parent named Beth Meyers as saying that the one-size-fits-all approach of Common Core is not really supporting “foundational, philosophical material”, which she thinks students need before entering college.

What do you think? Do you want the Common Core or do you agree the one-size-fits-all approach is making things worse?
